Still about Extensive reading, this time I will discuss the role of
extensive reading to improve students’ vocabulary. In this article, the writer
tell the advantages of extensive reading, such it makes us willing to read English book because we choose our own book. It called free voluntary reading. Also, extensive
reading can cause an increase in the range of vocabulary the learner possess. There
are two groups as participants. The
first one is experiment group and another one is control group. At the end of
the term, those groups do a post test and there is a significant improvement in
the experiment group.
However, there are some limitations
about extensive reading. Usually it caused noise and students sometime find it
difficult to concentrate on the exercise because of that matter. Another
limitation is if they were given project by their main subject teacher, they
will not attended English classes because they want to complete their project.
Despite of the limitations,
extensive reading is an effective method to develop students’ vocabulary skill.
I will still using this method when I become a teacher someday, of course I
will try to find out how to overcome the limitation before I use this method.
